Collaborative Media Lab
Strengthening Campus Media. Advancing Student Publishing
HBCU campus media provides students with something that cannot be replicated in the classroom alone: an opportunity to create, publish, experiment, lead, build an audience, and
serve a community.
The Collaborative Media Lab is a direct campus capacity-building programmatic effort, working with a small cohort of HBCU campus media programs to strengthen student participation and how
campuses create, produce, publish, and distribute journalism and media.
The Lab meets campuses where they are.
Rather than prescribing a single publishing platform or format, we work with participating
campuses to develop strategies based on their students, existing resources, institutional
environment, audiences, and goals.
Rethinking Campus Publishing
Publishing Is No Longer One Platform
Today’s students create and consume information across an increasingly diverse media
landscape.
A strong campus media operation may include a traditional news website or broadcast channel
engagement, but it can also include newsletters, podcasts, video, social media, digital
storytelling, or a combination of platforms.
The Collaborative Media Lab helps campuses think intentionally about what they produce, where they publish, who they are trying to reach, and how students can meaningfully participate in that
work.
Areas of Focus
Student Activation
Create stronger pathways for students to participate in campus media, contribute ideas,
produce content, develop leadership experience, and build work they can carry into future
opportunities.
Content & Production
Strengthen how campus media teams plan, create, produce, and manage content across
formats including written journalism, newsletters, podcasts, video, social media, and multimedia
storytelling.
Audience & Distribution
Publishing is only part of the process.
The Lab helps campuses think strategically about how content reaches students, alumni,
surrounding communities, and other audiences across the platforms where they already
consume information.
Publishing Strategy
Develop a publishing approach aligned with the campus’s goals, student interests, available
resources, and audiences.
This can include identifying the platforms and formats that make the most sense for a campus
and establishing more sustainable approaches to producing and distributing content.
Community Reporting
HBCUs are deeply connected to the communities that surround them.
The Lab explores opportunities for campus media to expand beyond institution-centered
coverage and produce journalism and information that also serves surrounding communities.
Coaching & Support
Participating campuses receive direct strategic guidance based on their existing capabilities,
challenges, priorities, and goals.
The objective is not to impose the same model on every institution, but to help each campus
identify and build an approach that works within its environment.
A Cohort-Based Approach
The Collaborative Media Lab works intensively with a small number of campuses at a time, allowing
the Collaborative to provide more focused coaching, strategy, and support.
Each participating campus begins from a different place.
Some may already operate active student newsrooms and need support strengthening
publishing, distribution, or audience strategy.
Others may be rebuilding student participation or exploring new formats such as newsletters,
podcasts, video, or digital-first publishing.
The Lab is designed to meet each campus at that starting point and help develop a path
forward.
From Campus Publishing to Community Impact
Campus media can serve more than the institution itself.
HBCUs often sit within communities where there is a need for more trusted, consistent, locally
relevant information.
As participating campuses strengthen their publishing capacity, the Collaborative Media Lab will
explore how student journalism can contribute to broader community information needs while
giving students meaningful reporting, production, and publishing experience.
Extending the Reach of Student Journalism
Strong student journalism should have opportunities to travel beyond the campus when the
reporting serves a broader public interest. HBCU-DMC works across the HBCU community to connect students with opportunities,
strengthen campus media, and build stronger connections between campuses and the broader
media industry.
The Collaborative is exploring pathways that can help relevant student-produced journalism
reach wider audiences through relationships with professional media organizations and other
distribution opportunities.
This work can provide students with greater visibility for their journalism while introducing them
to professional publishing standards and expanding the reach of reporting originating from
HBCU campuses.
Building for the Future
The Collaborative Media Lab will also help inform the Collaborative’s longer-term development of
publishing resources and technology designed specifically around the needs of HBCU campus
media.
Our goal is to make it easier for campuses to create, manage, publish, and distribute content
across platforms while reducing the technological and resource barriers that can limit student
publishing.
